Special warnings and precautions (SmPC sec. 4.4, excerpt): 4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use Since aciclovir is excreted renally, doses should be reduced in patients with renal impairment (see section 4.2). Because of the risk of reduced renal function in elderly patients, the need to reduce the dose in this group should be considered. Both elderly patients and those with renal impairment are at increased risk of developing neurological adverse reactions and should be closely monitored for evidence of such reactions. In reported cases these reactions were generally reversible on discontinuation of treatment (see section 4.8). Current clinical trial data are insufficient to conclude that aciclovir treatment reduces the incidence of complications associated with varicella in immunocompromised patients.
