Descritpion and Composition
One sachet of Barium Sulphate for Radioscopy 100 g powder for oral/rectal suspension contains barium sulphate 100 g.Indication: This medicine is used for diagnostic purposes, for the radiological examination of the pharynx, oesophagus, stomach and intestine.
Contraindications (SmPC sec. 4.3): Hypersensitivity to barium sulphate; severe general condition of the patient (e.g. acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, cachexia, malabsorption syndrome); impaired integrity of the gastrointestinal tract walls or suspicion thereof, including recent lesions or chemical burns of the lower gastrointestinal tract; tracheo-oesophageal fistula; oesophageal stenosis; severe swallowing disorders; intestinal obstruction; severe constipation; gastrointestinal haemorrhage; history of ulcer with haemorrhage and perforation; atresia; immediately before or after gastrointestinal surgery, including colon polypectomy or biopsy; gastrointestinal ischaemia; megacolon or toxic megacolon; necrotising enterocolitis; acute abdomen; during and up to four weeks after radiotherapy to the rectum or prostate; food allergy; infants and young children with swallowing deficiencies.
Special warnings and precautions (SmPC sec. 4.4, excerpt): The medicine must be used under medical supervision. Diagnostic procedures involving the use of radiopaque contrast agents should be carried out under the guidance of specially trained personnel with thorough knowledge of the procedure. Serious adverse reactions associated with the administration of barium sulphate products have been reported: aspiration, intravasation, perforation, anaphylaxis, which may be life-threatening or fatal. These adverse effects are often related to the technique of product administration, the underlying pathology and/or patient hypersensitivity.
