Magnesium Sulfate-BP inj.

Magnesii sulfas

1 ml of solution for injection contains magnesium sulfate heptahydrate 250 mg (available in N5x10 and N5x2 packs, 5 ml ampoules).

Indication: Curative treatment of torsade de pointes; treatment of acute hypokalaemia associated with hypomagnesaemia; treatment of hypomagnesaemia; magnesium supply in parenteral nutrition; prophylaxis and treatment of eclamptic seizures.

Contraindications (SmPC sec. 4.3): Hypersensitivity to magnesium and its salts or to any of the excipients listed in sec. 6.1. Hepatic encephalopathy, hepatic impairment. Severe renal impairment. Myasthenia gravis. Cardiac pathology.

Special warnings and precautions (SmPC sec. 4.4): Magnesium sulfate must be used with caution in patients suspected or known to have renal impairment. Magnesium sulfate must not be used in hepatic coma where there is a risk of renal failure. Serum calcium levels must be monitored in patients receiving magnesium sulfate. Blood pressure must be monitored during intravenous injection and continuous infusion. Magnesaemia must be monitored in patients receiving magnesium sulfate; treatment must be stopped as soon as it normalises. Respiratory depression may occur with magnesium sulfate administration, so caution is required in patients with respiratory disease. The product must not be administered into weakened or atrophied muscles.
