Tiopental-BP

Thiopental sodium

Composition: Active substance: thiopental sodium 0.5 g or 1 g/vial powder (with sodium carbonate). Contains sodium 2.2–4.9 mmol/vial.

Indications: Intravenous barbiturate anaesthetic for short-duration general anaesthesia, induction/maintenance of anaesthesia, hypnosis, control of convulsions and reduction of intracranial pressure, administered exclusively by qualified medical personnel.

Precautions: Contraindicated in allergy to thiopental/barbiturates, respiratory obstruction, acute asthma, myotonic dystrophy, severe shock, porphyria. Precautions in intracranial hypertension, severe respiratory/cardiac disease, hypovolaemia, myasthenia gravis, adrenal/hepatic/renal insufficiency, metabolic disorders; risk of tissue damage from accidental intra-arterial injection, laryngospasm, dependence; multiple drug interactions (including antihypertensives, opioids, MAOIs); pregnancy only if benefit outweighs risk; breastfeeding interrupted for a minimum of 12 hours.
